Break up with plastic

Break up with plastic video

It’s great to see younger people becoming the models for what rest of us could be doing. There are a couple of problems with this video, namely that if you put a bamboo and boar’s bristle toothbrush in a plastic bag in the landfill, you are no better off than putting a plastic toothbrush in a landfill.  But it definitely has the right idea: How can we reduce the use of plastic in our lives?

  1. I think the poster's recommendation for the bamboo handle and boar's bristle brush was based on the fact that both are biodegradable (although both will probably take many years to degrade), whereas the plastic toothbrush is not.

Alternatively, if the user ever builds a camp fire or bonfire, presumably s/he could dispose of the worn out bamboo toothbrush by burning it. There should be no carcinogenic compounds in the toothbrush to pollute the air (at least no more so than burning firewood would do).

  2. It's great that you have the awareness that the best way to dispose of a bamboo toothbrush is by burning it or composting it, which will take some time. However, many consumers will think that if they throw it in a plastic garbage bag in a lined landfill, it will biodegrade. It won't.
